Suicide Prevention Week

Suicide and Mental Health Awareness

All of us at Financial Enhancement Group have been affected by mental health or suicide in our lifetime, whether with our family, friends, colleagues, or maybe even our own personal struggles. We’ve seen the toll that it takes in many aspects of life, this is why we feel it’s important to bring awareness to Mental Health.  September 8-14 is National Suicide Prevention Week and October 6 – 12 is Mental Health Awareness week, so for the next month, we will be raising awareness and participating in activities.

In addition to the emotional loss associated with suicide, there is also an economic loss due to the fact that suicide falls most heavily on adults who are working age. For example, the unexpected cost of a funeral or the unplanned medical expenses of a loved one are results of suicide. If you or someone you love are struggling, it is important to fit the costs of counseling and other medical costs into your financial plan to get the help needed in order to prevent the burdens of suicide.

Suicide is a major public concern, there are not many people who have not been impacted by suicide in some way. Unfortunately, suicide is among the leading causes of death in the United States and based on recent nationwide surveys suicide is only getting more common. It is important that our community stays informed on this subject so that we can work together to prevent it. The impact of suicide goes far beyond the person who takes their life, it has a lasting impact on family, friends, and communities. It is devastating.

The behaviors listed below are signs that someone could be contemplating suicide, provided by the National Institute of Mental Health:

  • Talking about wanting to die or wanting to kill themselves
  • Talking about feeling empty, hopeless, or having no reason to live
  • Planning or looking for a way to kill themselves, such as searching online, stockpiling pills, or newly acquiring potentially lethal items (e.g., firearms, ropes)
  • Talking about great guilt or shame
  • Talking about feeling trapped or feeling that there are no solutions
  • Feeling unbearable pain, both physical or emotional
  • Talking about being a burden to others
