New $1,000 Tax Credit for Higher Education Savings | ||
|
Indiana is offering a new tax credit when you save
for a college education. For contributions to the CollegeChoice 529
Investment Plan®, Indiana will give you a credit equal to 20% of your
contributions, up to a maximum credit of $1,000 per year. This credit is effective for contributions made on or
after January
1,
2007. Tax credits such as this are a very valuable tax planning tool as
they reduce the tax you owe
dollar-for-dollar.
In other words, this credit could either
increase your refund, or reduce the amount you owe by up
to $ 1,000!!!
Other Highlights of the CollegeChoice 529 Investment Plan®:
· Earnings
grow tax-deferred and are free from federal and state income taxes if used for
qualified post-secondary education expenses.
· Account
owners can choose between several actively managed asset allocation portfolios.
Investment selections can only be changed once per calendar year, however.
· The
beneficiary
can be
changed. In fact, the account owner can even be named as beneficiary of the
account.
· Rollovers
into the Plan will Qualify for the Tax-Credit!
· Multiple
Fee Structures, but typically 5.25% of initial investment, .40% Annual
Administrative Fee, and $10 Annual Account Maintenance Fee
· Generous
Contribution Limits. The Current Contribution Limit is $298,770 per Beneficiary!
